Jacobs On The Mall, South Mall

Tonight I was at Jacobs on the South Mall in Cork and this is said to be one of the best restaurants in the city.

The Setting

The premises used to be a Turkish Baths and this is a large premises that is well decorated and well laid out. The staff gave us a warm welcome and as we got to our seats, you could see that each table had plenty of space around it to sit and enjoy the atmosphere.

The Menu

The menu was Irish style with plenty of options to choose from.

The Starters

I went with the Fish Cakes to start which were really good. The others at the table went for the Pulled Pork and Cheesy Potato Croquettes and the special Monkfish Scampi with Aioli.

All scoring top marks except for the Croquettes could have been cheesier, but that is a small complaint.

The Main Event

The star of the show was the 8oz Fillet Steak which I got medium rare. It came with a kind of Mushroom Cake, a Croquette and came resting on a bed of caramelised onion.

The steak itself was really good and the pepper sauce on the side had a really distinctive taste.

I got a mojito to drink which was a little too strong but overall it was really good.

There was one more Fillet Steak at the table and also the Pan Fried Hake with potato gratin. All mains score high on the list.

Jacobs vs Market Lane

The main competition here would be Jacobs vs Market Lane and I would have to say that Jacobs felt more exclusive, better atmosphere. It seems more upmarket as well with a more exclusive menu.

The steak also was presented better and it tasted a bit better as well. Overall not too much between the restaurants but this is definitely in the 8s and not the 7s.

To Finish

I had a coffee to finish and there was one ice cream sundae at the table as well.

The Verdict

Overall a very impressive evening at what is undoubtedly one of Cork's top restaurants. Well worth checking out if you are in Cork looking for one of the best restaurants.
